Who is to blame for the collapse of one-time giant miller Mumias sugar? Every election season, this is a contentious topic that politicians use to win public support.
The company's demise is once again a political issue ahead of the 2022 elections. While on a tour of Mumias, Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala blamed former sports CS for the winding up of the sugar company. Malala, while addressing a gathering in the town, said a lorry intercepted at Nambale trading centre ferrying vandalized Mumias Sugar scrap metals belonged to Echesa. Malala added that the matter is at the Nambale police station.
Digging in at his nemesis, Malala stated that Echesa, as Sports Cabinet Secretary did nothing to uplift talented youth from the area forcing him to intervene and organize sporting activities in the region. In a video shared on his Facebook page, Malala asserts that Echesa is pushing him to the wall and will reap the repercussions in due course. The schism between the young politicians from the western began a couple of years back. Echesa stated on live television that DP Ruto sponsored the construction of Malala's home while the latter was an MCA elected on an ODM platform.
In 2019, cops arrested the two in connection with the heinous killings that shook Matungu that left 18 people dead. The police questioned them over their links to the activities of the gang murderous Matungu.
Malala, who is eyeing the Kakamega gubernatorial seat, is in a charm offensive in the county popularising his bid. Rashid Echesa, on the other hand, has thrown his lot with UDA associated with Deputy President William Ruto.
