Police had to be called upon and salvage a potentially dangerous situation that arose during Raila Odinga's Presidential campaign rally in Mkomani Mombasa county.
The rally had been peaceful and destined to be a success until Mombasa County gubernatorial aspirant Mike Sonko showed up at the venue. A few minutes after the former Nairobi Governor arrived, chaos broke out from irate youths who were demanding that Sonko leaves and attacked his convoy.

Police were forced to fire teargas cannisters at the youths in a bid to calm the chaos. Sonko is vying for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat on a Wiper party ticket. He was not initially planned to attend the rally but had earlier announced that he would be present.
The rally was also attended by the incumbent Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and vita Member of Parliament, Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir. Sonko and Joho do not see eye to eye and have been engaging in a war of words over the past few weeks.
