Against all odds, Lydia Haika, a little-known candidate for Taita Taveta County Women Representative, won a surprise victory in 2017.
Given the unpopularity of President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party in the region at the time, Haika was an underdog running on a Jubilee Party ticket. However, a charismatic politician completed the task, shocking the ODM leadership.
Haika was leaning toward President Kenyatta's side at the moment. She joined herself with the DP's axis immediately after Uhuru's heated feud with his deputy William Ruto.
Going into the general election on August 9, Haika is one of many MPs across the country who may pay a high price for their political ties to Dr. Ruto.
The tsunami may be too big for Haika now that the President has teamed up with ODM leader Raila Odinga through their "Azimio la Umoja" political grouping.
During the August election, she is most likely to run under the banner of the United Democratic Alliance. As things stand, her political future in Taita Taveta County is guaranteed. Haika has a long way to go unless she can repeat her stunning 2017 victory.
