EACC Summons Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa Over Graft Scandal At KETRACO

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has been called to appear before the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) to address charges of corruption during his time working for Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO).

I can confirm that the Governor has been called before the EACC to give a statement as part of an ongoing inquiry into the Lake Turkana Wind Power project, a source at the anti-corruption organization informed .

"A report on alleged anomalies in payment to a private investor sparked the investigation. The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company's (KETRACO) CEO at the time of the transactions was the Kakamega Governor.

The Governor is only one of many people of interest being looked into in this case.

The National Assembly Public Investments Committee (PIC), which at the time had opened an investigation into the unlawful transactions between Kenya Power and the LTWP, reacted to Barasa's resignation from KETRACO in February of this year.

MPs questioned the timing of his resignation which was announced two months before his term was set to expire in April, in an effort to determine how more than Ksh. 600 million extra was allegedly paid to LTWP and other millions of shillings were paid to the incorrect accounts.

Similar to this, the PIC was interested in learning why the KPLC gave the LTWP false accounts and who was responsible for them.

EACC adds that since the investigation is still in its early stages, more information on the matter will be released at a later time.
