Kenyan Youth Factor In 2022 General Elections

75 percent of the total Kenyan population is aged between 18-35 years old. This means of the reported 47.6 million people, Youths are around 35 million. That is according to Kenya's 2019 population census data. Though the World Bank currently estimates Kenya's population to be 53 million people.

Youths are the critical voting constituency in Kenya as of 2017, 51 percent of the registered voters were youths. The IEBC is planning to add 6 million more voters to their register. The registration exercise started on 4th October and is expected to end on 2nd November this year. The Vote tally is expected to rise to 25.6 million voters. This means youths will account for more than 13 million of the votes.

In the 2017 elections, 314 youths won elective positions. And this number is expected to rise since many youths have shown interest in running for political offices in next year's elections. It will also be upon the aspirants to formulate ideas and policies which resonate with the youths to win their votes.
