With President John Pombe Magufuli reported dead, Samia Suluhu is now the current face of Tanzania representing the country at various international fonts. This may not be the first time she is doing this since the late president of Tanzania rarely traveled internationally during his tenure.
In fact, over two weeks back at the virtual East African Heads of State Summit, Magufuli appeared at the introduction only and left Samia to participate in the rest of the discussion. It turns out that was the last time he was seen in public.
Who is the acting president of the United Republic of Tanzania?
Samia is now the first ever president that East African Nations have ever seen even as she serves as the acting President of Tanzania following the death of Magufuli.
Who is Samia?
Samia Suluhu Hassan, was appointed as the first female Vice –President of the Republic of Tanzania by the Tanzania's late President John Magufuli. Born on January 27, 1960 in, Zanzibar, Hassan is a rarity in Africa where politics is a male dominated dirty arena.
Prior to this, she served as a minister in the semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar in the administration of President Amani Karume. In 2014, she was elected as the Vice Chairperson of the Constituent Assembly tasked with drafting the country's new constitution.
Her journey to the top has been nothing short of methodical. Ever since joining politics in 2000, she has worked in various dockets and ministries. At one point, she was the only high ranking female to work in the cabinet.
During her serving time, the male gender looked down on her. This was because she was of the female gender(sexism). In the 2005 elections, Samia was re-elected and re-appointed as a minister. She has worked as the minister of Labour, Gender Development and Children.
In 1978, she was married to Hafidh Ameir, at present a retired agricultural officer. They have four children. Her second-born is Wanu Hafidh Ameir (born 1982). Wanu Hafidh is a special seat member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
