Magufuli Government Continues Intimidation As Female Opposition MP Receives Beating From Police

With slightly over two weeks to go to the Tanzania General elections, things are definitely heating up in the East African country. The opposition led by CHADEMA Presidential candidate Tundu Lissu has been on the receiving end of intimidation tactics by the Magufuli led government.

Lissu has seen his campaigns get suspended by the National Elections Commission (NEC) for speeches he made while on campaign. This came after he was summoned by police for the same reason. He ignored the summons.

In another worrying occurrence on the state of Democracy in Tanzania, an opposition Member of Parliament has been injured after being beaten by police officers. The female Member of Parliament who was elected on a CHADEMA ticket to represent Serengeti.

Catherine Ruge has been a fearless critic of the Magufuli led government. Ruge has also been quite expressive about her support for her political party's candidate Tundu Lissu. The 38 year old first time law maker was in the CHADEMA Party Offices together with a CHADEMA Councillor Francis Garatwa were assaulted by police officers and had their clothes torn.

According to the reports on social media, the Serengeti Member of Parliament was severely injured and is not in a good state. This comes less than two weeks after the United States released a statement concerning the state of democracy in Tanzania and the coming elections.
