IEBC selection panel chair Nelson Makanda and his deputy Charity Kisotu at KICC
It has now emerged that Azimio coalition's protest against the process of constituting the IEBC selection panel stems from a deep belief that the president has entrenched majority persons to serve his interests in the sensitive panel. This is according to fiery Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna
Speaking of Citizen TV, Sifuna cast aspersions on the law (IEBC Amendment Bill 2022) which the Kenya Kwanza coalition bulldozed through the senate to guide the selection process which openly gave them an upper hand in determining members who will constitute the panel.
Sifuna argued that representatives of mysterious organisations such as the interreligious council found their way to the panel despite having no known registered office. To him, those are people planted there to serve the interests of the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Sifuna also questioned why the new law brought on board representatives of the parliamentary service commission, yet those members are appointed by the president. To him, PSC was an extension of the executive and it's representatives who include Bethuel Sugut and Novice Euralia Atieno are there to serve the interests of government.
The Nairobi senator has maintained that they will not recognise or be party to an unfairly constituted panel handling such a critical affair of selecting new IEBC commissioners.
Amid the ensuing controversy, president William Ruto has already gazetted the seven members team to officially kick off business of finding new IEBC commissioners following the retirement of chairman Wafula Chebukati, Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu on January 17.
Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi and Justus Nyang'aya resigned while a tribunal led by Justice Aggrey Muchelule recommended that the President fires Irene Masit.
