Null And Void — Raila Rejects Presidential Results

Only hours after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati gazetted Dr. William Samoei Ruto as President-designate, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party presidential candidate has come out to make his first speech.

Addressing the nation from the media center at Kenyatta International Convention Center Raila said only Chebukati had access to the tallied presidential votes contrary to the law which stipulates that all the seven Commissioners are present during the final tallying and filling of Form 34-C.

Raila also clarified that the Azimio camp will be moving to the Supreme Court to seek redress for several malpractices performed by the Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, chief among them that he denied four Commissioners access to the Forms.

Also present during the briefing were Martha Wangari Karua, Raila's running mate in the presidential race, and Wiper Democratic Movement Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka.

The atmosphere at the press briefing was tense and although the veteran politician received a round of applause now and again, his fighting spirit appeared diminished.

"The figures announced by Mr. Chebukati are null and void and must be quashed by a court of law. In our view there is neither a legally and validly declared winner nor a President-elect," said Raila.

Political pundits said Raila was shop dressing and the whole exercise was meant for optics.

He called for peace among Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party supporters even though it's clear nobody is willing to Breach the peace on his behalf any longer.

Both Karua and Kalonzo put up a bold front.

The press invite by Raila's Press Secretary Dennis Onsarigo was austere and lacked the razzmatazz of announcements preceding earlier functions.

The excitement shown by the media in the opposition doyen during earlier briefings was absent.

According to a statement from his press secretary Dennis Onsarigo Tuesday, he stated that Raila will give his “Address to the Nation" at 2 pm at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Media Center. The event kicked off several minutes late and carried no anticipated fireworks.

Largely the battle seems gone from the octogenarian doyen of Kenya's opposition politics.
