The race to succeed the incumbent senator Hon. Cleophas Malala who is vying for gubernatorial seat in Kakamega county was not a walk in the park for Dr. Khalwalwe of UDA ticket and Dr. Brian Lishenga of Orange party it was bruising race between the two on who to succeed Mr. Malala.
Dr. Khalwalwe also the first senator of the county had the opportunity to serve Kakamega county residents for another moment as their senator, in 2013 he was elected as the first senator and in 2017 he declined the seat and contested for gubernatorial seat but unsuccessfully lost it to the incumbent governor Hon. Oparanya. Now Dr. Khalwalwe has the mandate to perform his oversight role on how the county spends it's resources.
However, the race was perceived to be tough Dr. Khalwalwe managed to carry the day by getting 247,860 votes and his closest competitor Dr. Brian Lishenga of Orange party got 195,052 votes. The victory of Dr. Khalwalwe is favoured by its political career in the county and also the opinion conducted a few days to election favoured him.
