Meet The Unsung Hero In Raila's Successful Political Journey

ODM leader Raila Odinga is no doubt one of the most successful and consequential politicians Kenya has ever produced.

In his decades- long political career, the former Prime Minister has occupied nearly all top political positions in the country with only the presidency eluding him. But with the 2022 general election inching closer, he could finally become the country's fifth President and the next occupant of the seat of power.

Much of Raila's successful political journey has a lot to do with the choice of his allies. Though the likes of Siaya Senator James Orengo and Kisumu Governor Anyang'Nyong'o get all the credit for the ODM leader's successes as a politician, there are some people whose efforts and contribution goes unnoticed and unappreciated.

One of those people is Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong. A key Raila general for almost 30 years now, the former Amagoro MP rose from nothing to something.

Today, Ojaamong is one of the most influential and dependable members of the Raila's political inner circle.

A former teacher, Ojaamong decided to quit teaching in the early 1990s to join the murky world of politics.

Under the tutelage of Raila, the future Amagoro MP honed his political skills. And as Raila's National Development Party ( NDP) merged with KANU in 2001, Ojaamong was NDP's Secretary General.

In 2002, after a bitter fallout between President Daniel Arap Moi and Raila over the choice of Uhuru Kenyatta as KANU presidential candidate, Ojaamong went on to serve as Treasurer for the breakaway faction that came to be known as LDP.

During the 2002 general election, Ojaamong was for the first time elected as an MP on an LDP ticket under the Narc coalition.

Even after the fallout between Raila and President Mwai Kibaki in 2005, Ojaamong swiftly crossed over the ODM camp that saw the former Lang'ata MP contest the presidency for the second time.

With the formation of the Grand Coalition Government following the contested 2007 presidential election results, Ojaamong was appointed as Labour Assistant Minister, the position he held until 2013.

He was easily elected as Busia Governor in 2013 on an ODM party ticket, the seat he went on to defend in 2017.

It is worth to note that Ojaamong is one of the few men driving the ODM agenda in the former Western Province.

As a key Raila disciple, the former high school deputy principal has mastered the game and is one of the most shrewd politicians in the country.

Before Ojaamong, Busia was a key KANU zone. But today, under the former Amagoro MP, the region is one of the solid ODM strongholds.

Though he is not your typical Kenyan politician who likes to be in the news everyday, Ojaamong is a low profile man. Somehow, his contribution to Raila's political career goes unrecognized.
