Kisumu Governor Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o on Saturday struggled to fight off tears during the burial of Professor Boaz Otieno Nyunya.
The burial took place at his home in Kapuonja in Kisumu West, with Nyong’o, his Deputy Mathew Ochieng Owili, Kisumu West MP John Olago Aluoch and Kisumu County Women Representative Rozaah Akinyi Buyu among the mourners.
Professor Nyunya was until his death on July 29, the Kisumu County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of Health and Sanitation. He died while on an official County duty in Nairobi.
To Governor Nyong’o, Professor Nyunya was not just a member of his Cabinet, but a friend and a team player. Nyunya’s death seemingly took a toll on him.
“A sad day as we lay to rest my Minister for Health Professor Boaz Otieno Nyunya. We have lost an astoic medic, a towering researcher and a disciplined professional. Go thee well Prof Nyunya!” he said.
He died aged 65. “Go thee well Prof and thank you for your immense contribution to our County of Kisumu,” Buyu said of the late while Deputy Governor Owili said, “Prof Boaz Nyunya will be remembered as a consummate professional whose commitment to serve the public was exemplary.”
The late Nyunya had only served in Nyong’o’s cabinet for a year before his untimely death.
He was sworn in, in July 2020, taking over from the Governor who was then acting as CECM in charge of health and sanitation.
