Until March 2013, Peris Chepuchumba Simam was a high-ranking state officer enjoying all the trappings of power. She had security detail attached to her, a driver, government car and a fully furbished office with staff.
Then serving as Eldoret South Member of Parliament, Simam was on a good pay befitting her position in Government. For a woman who had spent much of her life as a classroom teacher, stepping to Parliament was a dream come true.

When she was declared the winner of the Eldoret South MP race in 2007, Simam must have thought of herself as a lucky woman who that God loved. After all, she had trounced men to clinch the seat.
With Raila Odinga- led Orange Democratic Movement party having taken the region by storm, nothing was goings to stop Simam's march to Parliament.
In Parliament, the Kenyatta University-trained teacher was elected as vice secretary for the Kenya Women Parliamentarians Association. The career teacher from Uasin Gishu had taken the country's politics by storm quite literally.
But after five years of fame and influence, Simam's political career took a twist in 2013 as she lost her MP seat. From there, everything went south for her.
Perhaps, the highlight of her fall from grace to grass was in 2016 when the Eldoret Court gave a shock ruling that handed Simam and her husband a long jail sentence.
Charged with various accounts of corruption related charges and corruption, the former legislator was handed a 18-,year prison sentence.

After spending some weeks behind bars, she was set free after paying Ksh 6.3 million fine.
After years of silence, Simam reemerged in 2021 January to declare that she will be in the race for the Uasin Gishu Governor seat come the next general election.
Perhaps, as a way to endear herself to the electorate in Deputy President William Ruto's home county, Simam has thrown her weight behind the DP in his State House bid.
