Jimmy Kibaki, the eldest son of Kenya's third President Mwai Kibaki, has thrust himself into the murky world of politics.

Jimmy on Tuesday waded into the Nyeri politics and declared his favourite candidate in the gubernatorial contest set for August 9.

He endorsed his boss in the The New Democrats (TND) party billionaire businessman Dr Thuo Mathenge.

Jimmy, the TND deputy party leader, expressed confidence that Thuo will unseat the incumbent Mutahi Kahiga who is allied to Deputy President William Ruto's UDA.

Also to endorsed Thuo was Nyeri's second governor Samuel Wamathai who assumed office on 24 February 2017 after the death of first governor Nderitu Gachagua.

"In 2017 when my enemies dug a pit for me to fall and I didn't I stood up and endorsed Former Governor Wamathai. Today he has returned the favor to his brother and done the same, am honored and I will diligently serve Nyeri people. Tenda wema nenda zako!" Thuo posted on Facebook.

In 2013, Thuo contested for the Nyeri gubernatorial seat on a Saba Saba Asili party ticket and emerged third.

In 2017, he was barred by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from contesting over questionable academic credentials.

Thuo is the owner of Brade Gate Poultry Industries, Bantu One Africa Hotel, among other numerous investments inside and outside Nyeri county.

Apart from Thuo and Kahiga, others in the Nyeri gubernatorial race are banker Peter Munyiri, policy and planning expert Gachara Kamanga and engineer Wahome Mwangi (Wamatinga).
