Rigging allegations have marred the neck to neck Kirinyaga County gubernatorial race pitting incumbent governor Anne Waiguru of UDA and her main challenger, Purity Wangui Ngirici who is the current women rep and running on an independent party ticket.
According to Waiguru, she has raised fears of some politicians wanting to influence the outcome of the ongoing tallying after two stuffed ballot boxes were allegedly sneaked into a tallying centre in Kianyaga in broad daylight, through the back door.
To mitigate the situation, Waiguru has therefore called for a momentary stop of the tallying exercise until the alledged ballot boxes are expunged from the room.
"Rigging in broad day light - Two ballot boxes with governors' ballots enter Kianyaga through the back door in broad daylight! They MUST be removed and counting must stop! Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC)" Waiguru said.
Waiguru is facing stiff competition from Wangui Ngirici who wants to end her one year term in office and escalating the one-term jinx in the gubernatorial seat.
In 2013, Joseph Ndathi was the pioneer governor who lost to Waiguru in the highly competitive 2017 polls.
