Former prime minister the Rt Hon. Raila Odinga is determined to maintain his influence in the coastal region ahead of 2022 general elections, the Orange Democratic Movement party boss is reportedly grooming a new team of young and energetic politicians who can take control of the coastal region as Mombasa governor Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi move to national politics.
Last week while addressing the Mombasa residents, Raila stated that governor Joho should now quit local politics for other leaders, Raila identified Mvita constituency member of parliament Hon. Abdulswamad Sheriff as the politician who can take control of the Mombasa region.
As reported by local dailies, the former prime minister has identified other politicians from all the counties within the coastal region and is determined to groom them ahead of the next polls.
The politicians include, Taita Taveta county governor Granton Samboja, mining CAS Gedion Mungaro, Kwale senator Issa Juma Boy, Kwale women representative Zuleikha Hassan, and Ganze MP Teddy Mwambire. Also in the list is Mombasa businessman Suleiman Shabhal who recently decamped to ODM.
The move is aimed at counterattacking deputy president William Ruto who has since taken away Kilifi county women representative Aisha Jumwa and Kilifi North member of parliament Owen Baya.
