One of the things that everyone in your circle always talks about is how there are so many opportunities to make a living online. But there is so much snake oil selling going online that people can't trust any website that promises quick riches online. Now and then, we hear of a scandal that leaves many families dejected, angry, and sad after losing all their lives' savings from a well-crafted con. There are always MLM scams online that leave many a pocket dry and hungry. Recently we've heard of the Amazon web worker scam that drained so many Kenyans and their families their income.
In this guide, I will share what legitimate ways to make a reasonable living are and the caveats associated with each way. Now, I need to clarify that although these ways work, you must build a reasonable audience to make a decent living. YouTube, for example, needs you to have at least 1000 subscribers to monetize your videos and at least 4000 hours of watch time. Blogging also requires you to have enough readers to make money off of AdSense or affiliate revenue.
Below are ways that are guaranteed to make your life better.
Start a YouTube Channel
YouTube is the holy grail of making money online, and it has given many creators an enviable lifestyle that many of us only dream of. Making YouTube videos is easy, but making quality videos is another story. The thing about YouTube is that it requires much effort to make money from it, but in the long run, that effort is worth it. To start a YouTube channel, you need to have a good camera to record the videos, or if you are doing narrations only and some placeholder images, you need to invest in a good recorder. That is just the tip of the iceberg; there is more to having the tools of the trade. You need to figure out how to beat the YouTube algorithm. You need to invest your time in finding an audience, you need a sound marketing strategy to make your videos go viral, and you need to have top-quality content to have a trusting audience.
The most known way of making money from YouTube is through Google AdSense. The 5-second adverts before you see videos are the source of income for many creators. You can also make money from affiliate sources. In your videos, you need to link other websites, such as Amazon, which sell stuff. If people purchase items from that link, which often is unique to them, then Amazon pays you a small percentage of the sale.
There is serious money to be made from Blogging. But to make a cent takes so much patience and terrible pieces of writing. Blogging is writing online. Some people write articles for the love of it, and others write for a living. There are two main ways to make money from a Blog. The first one is organically from your blog, and the other way is to write for someone with an already established blog. The latter is easier, as you instantly get paid maybe 20 dollars from the blog owner. The former is slow and painful but rewarding if you make it to the top.
If you have your blog, you will often make money from Adsense, which is Google's way of paying creators. This means if you have an ad placed in your article, you will get paid some money from someone purchasing something from the ad or just clicking it. It's not easy, but you can make a fortune from it.
Freelance web Development
You can make money from creating websites for clients, and you will often make maybe 20k per project. But one thing that prevents people from making it is that many people are unwilling to put the time and effort into becoming good programmers. You will need to spend more than a year of active learning to finally become a beginner or an intermediate developer in a particular programming language such as Ruby, Java, Python, and more, yet, you still need to treat yourself as a product that needs to be marketed. It will help if you put yourself out there. This means advertising your services on Reddit, Instagram, Facebook, cold outreach, etcetera. You need more than this; you need to have a solid GitHub portfolio to present to your clients.
Create and Sell Ebooks
If you, my reader, are proficient in a specific topic, you can write about it, sell your knowledge on sites such as GumRoad and make a good living out of it. You can be an excellent romance writer, horror writer, maybe an expert in stocks, or just anything and make a living from teaching others the same.
It would help if you still had a solid marketing strategy to make yourself recognized as an industry leader in your field and need good trust from your audience. You don't need just to limit yourself on GumRoad; you can even write a book and convert it into pdf form and then sell it on Facebook, Whatsapp, etcetera.
Record A podcast
If you are a good speaker or consider yourself funny or engaging, you can start your own podcast and monetize it. You can talk about things such as sex, politics, and the facade of celebrities and upload your content on YouTube, Spotify, Patreon, and Anchor and make a good living. Again, the audience is key here, and it would help if you had a solid social media following to crack the code.
