How to Avoid Birth Defects

Birth defects can occur during any pregnancy but some factors increase the risk for birth defects. Most birth defects occur in the first three months of pregnancy.

Main causes of birth defects are genetic problems,chromosomal problems,infections and exposure to medications or chemicals during pregnancy. Symptoms of abnormal baby in pregnancy are vaginal bleeding,blurred vision and reduced or no foetal movement.

Pregnant women should get 400 mlgs of folic acid everyday. If a woman has enough folic acid in her body at least one month before and during pregnancy,it can help prevent major birth defects of the developing brain and spine.

A woman should be sure to see her doctor when planning a pregnancy and start parental care as soon as she thinks that she is pregnant. Women should avoid alcohol at anytime during pregnancy. All types of alcohol are equally harmful. Drinking alcohol can cause Miscarriages or stillbirth.

Avoid smoking cigarettes if you are pregnant. The dangers of smoking during pregnancy include preterm birth,cleft lip and infant death. You should also prevent some infections since some infections that a woman can get during pregnancy can be harmful to the developing baby and can cause birth defects.

Choose a healthy lifestyle and maintain a healthy weight. A woman who is obese before pregnancy is at a higher risk for complications during pregnancy. Lastly, talk to your health care provider about taking any medications and vaccinations.
