A woman was on 3rd February 2021 arrested in Esikulu village in Busia county for allegedly refusing to take her children to school citing her religious beliefs. NTV News reported that the woman who has been identified as Susan Awino pulled her two children out of school claiming education was satanic. Police in collaboration with the area chief arrested the woman for infringing on her children's rights to education as enshrined in the laws of Kenya.
The woman further claimed that her husband was in support of her actions citing their religious beliefs. These actions comes barely a month after Education CS George Magoha said that area chiefs must ensure that all children of school-going age are enrolled in school and pursuing education. However, such cases of parents denying their children education are rare in a society that highly values education as a social equaliser.
Parents such as Susan Awino and her husband require sensitisation and mental assessment to evaluate their enhance their ability of making the future of f their children bright. Members of the society must also remain vigilant to ensure that all children attend school as required by law.
