Narok County has in the past recorded disturbingly a higher count of teen pregnancies that have been fueled by cultural practices such as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Today 40 year old man has been arrested in Narok county for marring a twelve year old girl. This is after medical staff at Narok Referral Hospital tipped off police when she was brought to give birth accompanied by his 40-year-old husband.
The minor, sadly lost the newborn baby that was delivered through Caesarean Section due to complications. She narrated to children officer how she was married off at the age of 7 after undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM)
"Ametulilia sana tukiwa hii ward. Anasema alitahirishwa na babake akiwa na miaka saba. Akamaliza miezi sita akapatianwa na baba yake eti juu mama yake anachukiwa na baba yake.
Sasa mahali alipewa anafanyia mama yake kazi kama mtu wa kazi. Amesema ameteseka sana juu anajaribu kurepoti nahata kutoroka baba yake anamrudisha." Naidoi Salau
According to Narok Referral Hospital, nursing officer, Kialiej Kimani the girl lost her pregnancy because she is so young hence her body could not support the pregnancy.
The minor is still undergoing treatment at the hospital and recuperating from complications that arose from the Ceaserian surgery and the pregnancy.
"She was admitted in our facility on the 18th of December. She had pregnant complications at her age that made her not to deliver normally because of contracted pelvis and we took her to theatre for an emergency operation so that we could save her and her baby.
Unfortunately the baby wouldn't make it because of the distance she came from and also the inability of her body to support pregnancy. We are happy the girl is okay but still undergoing treatment due to complications that arise from the operation and also from the pregnancy." Kialiej Kimani
