Joseph Mboya Nyamuthe was accused of drug trafficking and was arrested.
According to Ishami Tv which is a media outlet in Burundi, Mboya escaped from Rumonge Hospital where he was being treated.
Mboya was taken for treatment by the Deputy head of Murembwe Prison, Mrs. Adeline Nyayisenga after he showed cholera symptoms.
Two police officers were assigned to guard him.It is also believed that FDD rebels who are fighting the government could have aided his escape.
Mboya comes from Rangwe Cinstituency and he had expressed his interest in vying fora parliamentary seat in Rangwe.
He is also the son in law to the former Cabinet Minister Hezekiah Oyugi.
He set up a pharmaceutical company in Burundi back in 2019.
Mboya was arrested following claims that his company was importing drugs exceeding the quantities allowed in East African country.
The chemical substance in question include pethidine.
