Latest move by ODM leader Raila Odinga in Mt Kenya could complicate Deputy President William Ruto’s 2022 political calculations.
DP Ruto has been busy trying to build his support base and wooing majority of Mt Kenya into supporting him as he continues to make promises of what he can give the region.
Ruto is however facing a tough opponent as ODM leader Raila Odinga has received a warm welcome from the region especially now that President Uhuru Kenyatta is backing him.
National Assembly Deputy Whip Maoka Maore said the Mt Kenya team that had a meeting with Raila this week will campaign to popularize Raila and his party in Mt Kenya.
Maore who is also the Igembe North MP said the team will work closely with Raila’s team as details emerge that President Uhuru had instructed leaders from the region to work with Raila.
“The joint operations will start soon. The team you saw will campaign for Mr Odinga. He told us that he is not looking for followers but partners,” said Maore.
Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege on her part according to Nation said Mt Kenya leaders have been impressed by the former Prime Minister with how he approached them.
Chege further delivered some good news that more MPs from the region will be joining Raila’s camp as they seek to work together ahead of next year’s elections.
“We’re happy with Raila’s approach. He’s not like others who ask for votes by chest-thumping. We’ve begun a journey that will bring us together,” said Chege.
With the region making demands on who they will support, DP Ruto has made a new promise to deliver development projects based on what the region and its people need as Raila seeks partners and not followers.
