“Every inmate has to have their own bed and mattress," this is according to Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki.
Speaking at Mwea Prison in Kirinyaga County on Monday, May 8, CS Kindiki said that the Kenya Kwanza Government will partner with the private sector players and well-wishers to make sure inmates' welfare is bettered in all correctional facilities.
"...the 'One Prisoner, One Bed, One Mattress' program will be successful very soon,” added CS Kindiki.
Kindiki empathised with the inmates, insisting that prisons should not be hell. "It should be a place of reforms and rehabilitation. Most of the inmates are young people and we look forward to you leaving prisons, reformed appropriately so that you participate in nation-building."
He revealed that the government will provide equipment worth KSh1 billion for workshops across all prisons in the country to help prisoners be productive when they are released back into society.
In a few months, Kindiki says, there will be a new and modern Correctional Services Policy to review laws on prisons, borstal institutions, and probation services to match with the 21st Century standards,
The CS added that they will involve the Judiciary and other stakeholders in the justice sector to decongest the prison by half.
