Police probing death of staunch Man-Utd fan after 'embarrassing' 7-0 defeat to Liverpool

Police in Lira city, Northern Uganda have launched investigation into the death of a man whose lifeless body was found in his bedroom.

According to a report by the Ugandan newspaper; Daily Monitor, Eddy Okello, was found dead on Monday afternoon, hours after Manchester United suffered a humiliating 7-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield Stadium.

Mr Okello, a driver and a staunch Man-U is reported to have left his home at 6.30pm on Sunday to go and watch the match at a nearby entertainment spot.

North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Patrick Jimmy Okema, who confirmed Okello’s mysterious death said he went back to his house at around 9:30pm.

Mr Okema explained that the deceased was served supper by his mother, but did not eat, saying that he was feeling unwell. He went to his house and slept.

The police boss said they will interrogate his close friends and some of the people who interacted with him before his death.

Uganda has some of the most devoted and overzealous fans of the English Premier League (EPL), who have no qualms doing bizarre things as they express their support for their favourite clubs.

In January the country hit the sports news headlines after police arrested eight Arsenal fans in Jinja for celebrating in the streets without notice from the security agents. This was after Arsenal drubbed Man-U 3-2

The fans, who brandished a replica trophy, drove in a convoy of vehicles along Main Street in Jinja City jubilating before police intercepted them. They were charged with holding an illegal assembly contrary to the Police Act but released unconditionally a day later.

In the same month, Richard Ukuyo, an Arsenal fan, was killed in Adjumani District following an argument with a Man United fan.
