Features that separate religion from cult

Religion is growing fast in and some people are taking advantage of setting up cults posing as a church to deceive innocent Christians. First, what is a cult? A cult is a social group that is defined by its unusual religious, spiritual, or philosophical beliefs, or by its common interest in a particular personality, object, or goal.

The following are some characteristics that can help one differentiate between a religion and a cult.

1. Cult revolves around a personality, an object, or a goal.

Religion is formed based on Scripture and its rules and regulations are borrowed from the scriptures while the cult is based on a person or group of people who set the rules to be followed by others.

2. Cult leaders demand inappropriate loyalty.

One of the distinct characteristics of a cult is that its leaders demand inappropriate loyalty, a member who questions a cult leader invites punishment such as suspension or expulsion from the cult, sometimes members are physically beaten as a way of punishment.

3. Cults have a peculiar way of punishing their members.

Suspension and expulsion are some of the ways cults use to punish their members but some cults have extreme ways of punishing their members like beating them, canning them, some even go to an extent of killing their members as punishment.

4. Cults mostly deny their members from accessing their constitutional rights and freedoms.

Cults mostly bar their members from accessing their rights such as the right to education, right to health care, and the fundamental right to life by promoting things like human sacrifice, preventing their children from being vaccinated, and from getting a formal education. Some cults even prevent their members from voting and vying for elective positions and participating in the census.

5. Most cults cross the biblical boundaries of behavior.

Most cults promote behaviors that are far away from the biblical prescription. They do not allow their followers to read the Bible and then take the advantage to feed them with lies and half-truths about what God wants from them.
