Meet 2 Governors Outside Rift Valley Who Are Still Supporting Ruto

At one point, after the 2017 repeat presidential election, which ODM leader Raila Odinga boycotted, it appeared as if Deputy President William Ruto would have an easy ride in 2022. On paper, the DP was a clear favourite to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Riding on that advantage of being the country's second in command, Ruto literally "invincible".

In fact, at one point, his supporters claimed that the DP will be running against himself come the 2022 presidential contest. To them, it would take a miracle for Raila to recover in the country's political arena.

At that time, the DP had nearly half of the country's Governors "inside his pocket". What could stop such a man from ascending to the presidency?

How things change fast! Within no time, the former Prime Minister, himself a master political survivor, has turned things around and has now taken full control of the Uhuru succession race.

Suddenly, majority of the Governors who once backing the DP have made an unexpected u-turn and have thrown their weight behind the former Prime Minister.

It is worth to note that, outside Dr Ruto's Rift Valley region backyard, only two other Governors are still backing his State House bid.

Kirinyaga Governor Ann Waiguru remains one of the key backers of the DP having recently decamped from Uhuru and Raila camp to the "Hustler Nation" axis.

In the entire Mount Kenya region, Waiguru remains the only county chief backing the DP's State House bid.

Then there is Kwale Governor Salim Mvurya. The Jubilee Government Governor has maintained cordial relationships with the DP at the time the Coast region has embraced the former Premier.

In fact, there is a general perception that Mvurya could make the DP's surprise choice of a running mate come 2022.

Considering the amount of political influence that most of these Governors command across the country, the DP should he a worried man.
