Today, the towering entertainer falls into the list of most popular contemporary presenters who have given the Kenyan radio an indelible identity.
Yet Machoka’s childhood dream had never been to ply trades into the broadcast space.
Machoka found himself into the police force working as a Northern Frontier soldier in the General Service Unit. He however had a passion for radio and would listen to every bit of it.
While listening to one of his favorite shows in 1975, Machoka heard about a competition dubbed ‘SANYO Juu SANYO Talks.’ He decided to participate in the competition and to his amazement, he won it.
” I won the competition, which came with a radio as the prize. This required me to travel to Nairobi to pick my prize. When I met the producer of the programme that ran the competition, he immediately noticed my voice and told me it would be a great voice for radio if I was interested in radio broadcasting,” Obachi narrated in a previous interview.
Obachi took the broadcast offer and resigned from the forces to concentrate on his new full time job. As they say, the rest is history.
Today, he professes his unmatched mastery of the African music every Saturday in his popular Roga Roga radio show that has extended to TV.
