ODM has come out to make it public that the party will field a candidate for the presidential seat in August 2022. Yesterday, March 31, marked the end of submission of documents by members who are aspiring to be the party's flag bearer. At the closure of the day's business, the party made it clear that three members had fronted their candidature and were all approved by the party to move onto the next process.
The three members include the current party leader who also doubles as the former prime minister, Raila Odinga, Mombasa governor - Ali Hassan Joho and Kakamega governor - Wycliffe Oparanya. The three are expected to face each other in the next phase where the party delegation will vote for the best candidate.
This process of appointing the flag bearer among the three politicians was expected to kick off this month but the party has come out to alter the process. According to a communique offered today, April 1st, by the secretary general, this process has been halted until the BBI process is over. Many people were waiting in anxiety to know who will reign among the three only for Edwin Sifuna to change the tone.
"We have postponed the NEB activities on identifying the party’s flag bearer for 2022 general election until the process of BBI is concluded." Read a Tweet by the ODM party.
Yesterday, the party leader held a meeting with the party's top leadership where they pledged to support the BBI process to the end. Raila Odinga also insisted that ODM will continue to stand with the handshake because of the peace it brought to the country. This meeting seems to be the force that has influenced today's decision by the party to halt the presidential nomination process until BBI is over.
