Raila Suffers Another Loss in Busia as Key Lieutenants Decamp to UDA

UDA secretary general Cleophas Malala and former Busia women representative Florence Mutua in a jubilant mood earlier today

When former Busia women representative Florence Mutua quit her position as ODM party deputy secretary-general last year October, their was widespread speculation that she was warming up to join President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Six months later, it has turned out to be true after Mutua who served for two terms in parliament courtesy of the ODM party decamped to UDA and was officially welcomed to the ruling party by Cleophas Malala.

Mutua shifted allegiance in a star-studded UDA party event where Cleophas Malala was officiating massive grassroots recruitment in Busia. Alongside Mutua were other ODM officials drawn from across the county.

Mutua's move has however been interpreted as a deliberate attempt to seek a political lifeline especially after Raila Odinga, who many depended on lost the presidential poll. Her aspiration to succeed former Busia governor Sospeter Ojaamong also failed to be a fruit.

Mutua was condemned to political cold after she failed to clinch the ODM ticket in her bid for Busia governor. Current governor Paul Otuoma handed her a humiliating defeat in the nominations held in April, where she garnered 30,696 votes against Dr Otuoma's 49,330.

While taking a backseat from ODM party affairs, Mutua said she was quitting the position to focus on 'personal' matters.
