The national government has now embarked on a nationwide initiative to revamp women’s prison facilities in the country. According to Interior Cabinet Assistant Secretary, CAS, Winnie Guchu revealed that the initiative aims to equip women’s prisons with child care centers to give inmates children a comfortable life.
Speaking at Kodiaga Women’s Prison in Kisumu, Guchu says that the government has a new model for women’s prison in Kenya adding that the prisons department are in a bad shape and are inhabitable for the inmate’s children.
“The child care centers, we are doing countrywide as we have a module of what a child care center should look like in all prisons. This will ensure that the children have a proper place to sleep, proper feeding area, Toilets and all required space for them,” Guchu said.
Kenya Prisons Commissioner General Wycliffe Ogallo says kids accompanying their mothers in jail are not under any sentence and must feel at home. He says they must be made to feel comfortable and have a home environment like any other children.
