President William Ruto recently spoke about one of the reasons he believes he was able to defeat Opposition Chief Raila Odinga in the August 2022 elections. The two were once members of the same political party, ODM, before 2013.

During a speech on Saturday, Ruto said that he knew Raila personally, which made it easier for him to defeat the ODM leader. He said, "You (Raila) have said you know me and I know you well too. And because I know you, that is why I was able to defeat you and Uhuru in the last elections."
Raila had earlier on said thathe had worked with Ruto for a long time and that Ruto knew him well. The two were speaking at the burial of Mama Mukami in Kinangop Nyandarua county. Mukami was the wife of freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi and passed away on May 4, 2023, at the age of 96.
In the August 2022 elections, Ruto defeated Raila and two other candidates to become the president of Kenya. He received 7.1 million votes, while Raila received 6.9 million votes. Raila had been endorsed by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta as his preferred successor.
