Al- Shabaab is responsible for numerous terrorist attacks in Kenya, Somalia and neighboring countries that have killed a number of citizens. The group continues to plot and plan terrorist acts against the United States, US interests, and foreign partners.

According to reports reaching our newsroom today, the United States has donated 61 tons of weapons and ammunition to the Somali National Army (SNA) to support its fight against Al- shabaab in Kalmadug and Jubaland states. The equipment arrived at Mogadishu' s Aden Adde International Airport from a US Air Force C- 17 aircraft.

US Embassy Mogadishu Charge d' Affaires Tim Trinkle, Defense Minister Abdulkadir Muhammad Noor Jama and Defense Force Commander Brigadier General Odoa Yusuf Rageh attended the donation ceremony.

Designated and registered donations in accordance with the Arms and Ammunition Management Policy of the Federal Government of Somalia will be made to the SNA Danab Advanced Infantry Brigade. This military assistance is part of the US government' s commitment to Somalia' s cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

" We are very proud to stand with the Somali National Army and the Somali people as partners in this fight. This ammunition will be delivered to SNA Danab, one of the many brave forces against al- Shabaab, " he said.

General Odawaa Yusuf, commander of Somalia' s armed forces, thanked the US government for the donation, saying it would be a pillar in the fight against al- Shabaab.

" We thank the US government for the weapons and equipment we received today, " said Somalia' s Defense Minister Abduqadir Mohammed Noor.

The charity donated $9 million to the SNA in early January for weapons, vehicles, medical equipment and other equipment. The equipment was sent to Hirshabelle and Galmudug states to support military offensives in the region.

The Federal Government of Somalia reports to the US Security Council in close cooperation with the Office of Security Cooperation of the US Embassy Mogadishu.
