On May 15, 2022 Deputy President William Ruto nominated Mathira constituency Member of Parliament Honourable Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate in the August 9, 2022 presidential race.
Dr Ruto said Mr Gachagua had emerged as the best of his nominees for the position.
But experts have advised that the Deputy President should not forget that on August 31, 2020 he promised that he would nominate a woman as his running mate.

Dr Ruto made the announcement in Mombasa while distributing sanitary pads to women in Mombasa, explaining that women are the main pillars in the country and should be given equal opportunities in leadership.
But yesterday, despite the fact that two of the six people who applied for the seat were women, Dr. Ruto did not nominate one of them.
The two were Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru and Kandara MP Alice Wahome.
Although Dr. Ruto has promised to nominate 10 women in his cabinet, if he wins the presidency, this may turn out to be an air promise similar to the one he made on August 31, 2020.
