No Escape Route In Goma DRC as KDF Soldiers Controls M23 Rebel

Security of the population within the localities of Kibumba and Rumagambo remains a priority for the East African Community Regional Force (EACRF) deployed in Eastern DRC following the takeover of the two areas previously controlled by M23.

Towards achieving this, the Kenyan Contingent deployed in the territories under the umbrella of EACRF on Tuesday, 10 January 2022 conducted patrols in the Kibumba, Rugari and Kibati areas to enhance security to the locals.

During the patrols, the troops assisted locals, including women and children who were facing challenges of moving goods from their farms in Kibumba as a result of the rains. The locals appreciated the continued support accorded to them by the forces and implored them to keep up the good work.

M23 undertook a well-coordinated, sequenced and systematic withdrawal from occupied areas of Kibumba on 23rd December 2022 and has committed to fully comply with the Luanda communiqué on total withdrawal from areas under their control to the designated areas.

The 'Nyumba Kumi' and local security mechanism in place was activated, and the herd of cattle was located 10km south of Kibumba. EACRF joint night efforts with DRC security forces led to the herd's recovery, and the same was handed over to the owners after verification.

The parties remain concerned with the ongoing hostilities against innocent civilians and the lack of ceasefire by parties to the conflict, leading to aggravation of the security situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
