We have talked about the best rifles, snipers, shotguns, etc. It's time we look at types of bullets and their application to different situations.
We distinguish them in three different ways: cartridge shape, size, and projectile shape. Rounds shape and size are specific to firearms, but the lead's head helps choose the right bullet depending on the circumstance. We shall not spend time on shape or size. Our focus is on the structures of projectile heads and their advantages. Let's jump at it.
i. Full Metal Jacket (FMJ)
FMJ bullets are bimetallic. The inner (Primary) metal is generally soft—mostly lead.
It's varnished with a hard metal which can be steel or tungsten. You will not choose these rounds for personal protection because they'll go through your target and hit anything behind it, leading to collateral damage. Once FMJs leave the barrel, their velocity remains constant and the target fixed to the bull's eye. For that reason, they are best for contention and range/target shooting. FMJs are the best choice for semi-automatic guns.
ii. Void/Hollow Point
You don't need a gunsmith to identify hollow point rounds.
Their projectiles have an empty tip. The void allows the bullet to expand—form a mushroom upon heating the target. Structures formed on impact prevent shooting through the target and immediately immobilizing it. Their characteristic void makes them ideal for hunting as they are likely to leave their victims dead. They can be bimetallic, though rarely.
iii. Soft Points
Like the FMJs, squishy points have a primary soft metal and a rigid coating. The difference with FMJs is that the soft point's inner metal is exposed at the tip, making it pulpy.
They penetrate deeper and can easily slice the vitals. Exhibiting traits for the first two on the list makes them preferred by soldiers, gun owners, and range shooters. The three bullet types can further be divided into the flat nose, boat tail, and truncated nose to depict their initial effect on the target at impact. Show support by following my channel.
