Ever met a police van and wondered why all the police officers are women dressed in military combat and heavily armed? Meet Kenya's first female commandos known as Swat from Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) which falls under administration police.
The main function of RDU is the provision and maintenance of peace and security in adverse situations within the country. The unit is the first in Kenya to have all female officers as well as in the Sub-Saharan Africa.
The Swat team comprises of 48 commandos all draw from the Administration police service. The team's main goal is to deal with internal threats like terrorist attacks or any notorious gunmen.
The team is trained in the application of Israel Krav Maga weapon handling techniques as well as Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Swat team is mainly selected from multiple groups of women who participate and emerge top winners in women's shooting competitions.
The Swat team was formed in 2019 when Kenya was facing internal threat attacks from the al-Qaeda linked group Alshabab. Though the only female affair commando unit has not been involved in any serious operation, the unit is said to have high skills that almost matches that of the Recce squad.
