The Kenya Defence forces (KDF) troops serving under African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) donated scholastic materials to pupils in Elwak Primary School in Gedo Region, Jubaland State of Somalia, to boost education in the area.
The donated items included desks, chairs, office tables, wooden blackboards, sporting equipment and a water tank provided by AMISOM under its Quick Impact Projects (QUIPS) aimed at supporting various sectors in the Federal Republic of Somalia.
The learning materials were handed over to the school management by Commanding Officer 3 Mechanised Infantry Battalion Lieutenant Colonel Peter Mwangi at a brief ceremony held at the school and attended by the pupils, local leaders and Somalia Security Forces.
Lieutenant Colonel Mwangi explained that the donations will contribute in fostering education for peace and development by ensuring that the pupils are well equipped while learning, which he noted will motivate the parents to send their children to school.
‘‘Education is the essential foundation for prosperity and serves as a conduit to success. It also helps nurture young people’s talent and creativity. This helps them to connect with other people around the globe and inspires them to discover and analyse the world in which they live,’’ said Lieutenant Colonel Mwangi.
Elwak District Commissioner Ibrahim Guled thanked the AMISOM troops for their support saying that they are looking forward for more support to other schools in Burahache town.
“We are grateful that AMISOM is undertaking various noble projects that are aimed at making our society better,” said Guled.
SSF Commander Brigadier General Abbas and Elwak District Education Officer Hassan Ali Hassan attended the event among others.
