Three Types of Recruitment Exercises Conducted by KDF Annually

The Kenya Defense Forces recruits men and women from all walks of life annually within the boarders of the country and they must be citizens with no criminal history.

Recruitment exercises are done in every sub county level with thousands of young men and women having the opportunity to be soldiers for their country.

For thousands of youth aged 18 to 30 years, this is the perfect opportunity to have their lifelong dreams fulfilled by joining the military.

However, what many might be unaware of is the fact that there are three recruitment drives done by KDF Annually.

Below are the three recruitment exercises done by KDF:


This is the normal recruitment that requires only your Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education certificate with the minimum entry grade of D plus for men and D plain for women.

These men and women join the military on a hands on basis and start with the rank of private and a basic salary of 32,000 Kenya shillings.

Servicemen and Women

This recruitment exercise is usually done through applications that are sent to the Department of Defense Headquarters.

The qualifications for being recruited into KDF as a serviceman or woman are that one has a Diploma or a Certificate in a related field that the KDF wants.

The rank that the Servicemen and women start is the Sergeant with a basic salary of 50,000 Kenya Shillings.

Cadet Officers

Applications to be recruited as a cadet officer require that you have a bachelor's degree in the area that they are looking for.

Applications are done and shortlisted candidates are notified through the local dailies.

They are then invited for interviews after which the successful candidates proceed to training school.

The cadet officers start with the rank of lieutenant with a basic salary of about 78,000 Kenya Shillings per month.
