One of the planes that was extensively used for the evacuations is the Boeing C-17 Globemaster III. Today, Abraxas Spa posted photos showing US soldiers loading a 15 tonne Boeing CH-47 Chinook inside a C-17 plane at Hamaid Karzai International Airport on 28 August.
The photos showed that the tandem rotors on the Chinook helicopter had been removed so that it may fit inside the C-17. The Boeing CH-47 is a twin-engined, tandem rotor, heavy-lift helicopter.
The CH-47 is anong the heaviest lifting of Western helicopters. Its name, Chinook, is from the Native American Chinook people, of Washington state. The Chinook has a top speed of 305 km/h and costs thirty-five million US Dollars. It seems this particular helicopter is very important that it was not left behind.
