Heavy gunfire rented the air as heavily armed M23 rebels overrun a village that was under the control of the local militias and the FDLR. It is reported that detonations of heavy and light weapons have been reported as the M23 rebels took control of the Kisharo village.
It is reported that panicked, residents headed for Buramba, 30 kilometers from Kisharo, and others for Nyamilima and Ishasha.

According to the information released , the M23 rebels carried out systematic looting in Kisharo after capturing it and it is reported that items of shops, livestock and other belongings of the population were taken away by the rebels.
It should be noted that the M23 rebels promised in a January 1 statement to withdraw from Rumangabo and Kishishe, at the request of the East African Community (EAC) force, the EACRF which Kenya's KDF is also a participant.
