The KDF was on Monday, 9th August 2021, deployed to the Democratic Republic of Congo as a Quick Reaction Force (QRF) on the United Nations Stabilization Mission (MUNUSCO). (KDF soldiers during deployment) The Brigade is set to aid the under-equipped, poorly trained, and disorganized Congolese Army in doing away with the insecurity in Eastern Congo. This is the most expensive peacekeeping mission in the UN's history. The Kenyan troops join Nepal, South Africa and Tanzania to form the Force Intervention Brigade.
The elite squad was at the Pre-deployment training grounds in Embakasi Garrison for about a year to meet the KDF and UN requirements. The troop's key role is to protect civilians, provide security to UN personel and restore business links in the region. They are also there to neutralize the dangerous militia groups popularly known for raping, killing, forcefully recruiting young adults and using children and women as human shields.
Neither of the two governments nor Monusco has provided timelines or further information on deployment.
Here are photos of the volatile Congo militia.
