For months, regional leaders have urged the Congolese government to engage in negotiations with the M23 in order to map out a way to a lasting peace in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, particularly in the vast east of the nation.
The M23 movement said that the military attacked its stronghold on Wednesday night using heavy weaponry and jets.
Lawrence Kanyuka, the group's political spokesman, claimed that DRC soldiers attacked the rebels using jets and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs). According to Kanyuka, the soldiers also targeted internally displaced people in the attack.
Part of the statement said, "On Wednesday, December 28, 2022, the DRC government coalition deliberately launched a targeted attack against the displaced population fleeing in the controlled region by the said coalition using SUKHOI heavy artillery and jets.
M23 has said that it will carry out defensive operations against the DRC military and armed organizations that aid the government.
M23 declared that it "will continue to safeguard both itself and people under surveillance."
Additionally, it urged regional leaders taking part in peace negotiations to directly cooperate with the DRC government in search of a durable resolution.
A day after the M23 rebels withdrew, the KDF took control of the Kibumba region. Later, on Christmas Day, the same forces evacuated the region.
