Just a few hours after former President Uhuru Kenyatta closed the peace talk meeting in Nairobi, M23 rebels have issued a statement, highlighting three key points.
In a statement released by the Spokesperson Lawrance Kanyuka, the M23 movement is ready to down their weapons and retreat from the territories they are currently occupying, just like they had been ordered to do so in the previous mini-summit that was held in Angola last month, which Uhuru attended.
Apart from ceasing fire and leaving the territories, they have also requested that they have direct talks with the government of DRC to find a long-lasting solution
M23 rebels also want to meet the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and other forces that form the East African Regional Force to discuss the implementation modalities. They also want to meet Uhuru Kenyatta, who has been acting as the mediator.
Below are their three points
1. The M23 Movement confirms its maintenance of the ceasefire.
2. In regards to the implementation of the said recommendations, the M23 is ready to start disengagement and withdraw, even though it was not represented in the said summit. The M23 lends its support to the regional efforts to bring long-lasting peace to the DRC.
3. The M23 Movement request a meeting with the East African Regional Force and Ad-Hoc Verification Mechanism to discuss the implementation modalities and renews its request for a meeting with the mediator and facilitator away to discuss the matter of its concerns.
