In yet another attack on Sunday night, bandits struck the village of Lomelo in Turkana East Sub- County, causing chaos as they fired indiscriminately and set fire to a fence surrounding a gated community. This violent act was a retaliatory move after Kenya Defense Forces bombed one of their hideouts in Samburu.
The residents, who are still reeling from the effects of previous attacks, were forced to flee their homes, with some seeking refuge in a designated area within the village. The bandits are believed to be from neighboring Baringo County, and their raid occurred just before midnight, catching the residents off- guard.
This is the fifth time the village has been attacked, and it came only a week after a daring raid in Turkana and Baringo counties. The situation is dire, and residents are living in fear of the bandits, who seem to have a never- ending thirst for violence. In the midst of the chaos, Ms. Sally Ekitela, a resident of the village, described the scene as terrifying.
The sudden explosion of flames from the fence engulfed the area, causing confusion and panic among the villagers. With no time to waste, people had to think on their feet and evacuate the most vulnerable members of the community to safety. Children, the elderly, and the disabled were carried to a central location in the village away from the raging fire.
The continued attacks have left the residents of Lomelo living in fear of what might happen next. The government has promised to increase security measures in the area, but these attacks show that more needs to be done to ensure the safety of the residents. The local authorities need to work together with the national government to come up with a long- term solution to end the violence and prevent future attacks.
