DRC CONGO: Protestors Claim EACRF Troops Deployed Ineffective in Fighting M23 Rebels

The Kenya Defence Forces troops in Democratic Republic of Congo have faced their biggest challenge and backlash after the residents protested against them.

Tens of thousands of Protesters took to the streets across the eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) today January 18. The Protestors accused the East African community Forces including the KDF Soldiers of hypocrisy and ineffectiveness over their in fighting the surging M23 rebels despite them conducting joint patrols with their FARDC counterparts to tame the group.

"On the ground, they are doing nothing but serving as a shield for the enemy, so this force has no reason to be here," said Josue Wallay, another Lucha activist.

The troops have been in the country following a decision by President William Ruto to deploy 903 soldiers from the Kenya Defence Force (KDF) to join a regional peacekeeping mission, known as the East African Community Regional Force to the Democratic Republic of Congo (EACRF-DRC). They were flagged off by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Robert Kibochi at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The eastern DRC has been plagued for nearly three decades by violence from armed groups, many of them inherited from wars that bloodied the region in the wake of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
