The Enemy Is Using Sophisticated Technology, CS Duale Calls For Security Forces to Use New Technolgy

The U.S. government recently revealed that al-Shabaab introduced the use of drones in its operations, a clear sign they have advanced in technology.

Defence Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale has channelled security agencies to make use of new technology to deal with enemies such as al-Shabaab, who are now using advanced and sophisticated technology in their operations.

Speaking on Friday, May 26, at the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) in Nairobi, where he delivered a lecture of opportunity to the students entitled ‘New Dawn in the Horn: Inching Towards Peace in the Region’, the CS noted that there are so many opportunities in the Horn of Africa, but for countries like Kenya to tap from these opportunities, peace must exist in the region.

He noted that the Horn of Africa has a huge untapped potential but due to the significant security threats, it becomes harder for one to make use of the opportunities

He listed terrorism, cybercrime, human and drug trafficking as well as the proliferation of small arms, among others to be security issues affecting the region

“There’s also the need to leverage technology since the enemy is using sophisticated technology. We should upscale the security infrastructure to combat the modern-day security threat,” said the CS.

CS Duale noted that there is an urgent need for the country to harness the youth potential, adding that an increase in the number of unemployed youths makes them prone to radicalization and recruitment to terrorist groups.

He concluded by noting that Kenya remains committed to ensuring peace is the order of the day in Eastern Africa because as "evidenced by our presence of KDF in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Somalia, and Ethiopia peace talks," adding "Kenya believes economic prosperity is directly linked to peace and security in our neighbourhood."
