Authorities identified the two culprits who are in custody as Hamisi Kassim Ndaro, 19, and Mohammed Nyundo Tundo, 28.
Mr. Sasati said the investigations comprised a multi-agency team led by officers from the Anti-terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) from Nairobi.
He further said that the team tracked the apprehended suspects who were on a motorcycle, all the way from Mombasa to Kwale following a tip-off by an unknown local.
“The operation was conducted at Msaviani village where the weapon was discovered hidden in the key suspect’s house at around 1 am, today,” he said adding that the duo is cooperating with police investigations.
He said on noticing they were being trailed, the two at some point ran off without the bike but police trapped them after which they showed them to the key suspect’s house where the firearm was retrieved wrapped in a pair of trousers secured in a mosquito net bag.
The county has recently been challenged by rising cases of insecurity, comprising of violent crimes some of which are linked to Al Shabaab returnees from Somalia.
