Slain KDF Officer's Mother Reveals Last Call A Day Before He Was Killed At a Military Camp In Somalia

A lone gunman entered a military base in lower Juba and shot dead at least three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers. The assailant ambushed the soldiers' camp leading to a fire exchange.

Preliminary investigations shown that the gunman fired his rifle indiscriminately, wounding five other soldiers before he was gunned down.

Gilbert Korir was among the KDF soldiers killed in an intense battle with the gunman.

The 22-year-old officer was recruited into the military in 2020 and was deployed to Somalia soon after graduating.

Korir bade his family members farewell and left for work before he fell victim to a lone gunman six months later.

A day before he was killed, Korir called his mother, Nancy Mutai and requested that she supervise the planting of crops in a farm he bought in the neighbourhood.

Korir promised to return home from service in March 2023, but as fate would have it, his life was suddenly cut short.
