Meet The Man Who Invented The Popular AK-47 Rifle And What '47' Stands For (Photos)

Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov, a former Russian lieutenant general, and a military engineer is credited for inventing the famous AK-47 assault rifle and its improvements.

According to reports, Kalashnikov gained the experience of developing various machine guns from self-teaching, and in 1947, he developed the most famous firearm in the world. However, he has never benefited from the profits as he believed he was committed to the service of the country rather than money.

The initials "AK" mean Avtomat Kalashnikova, Russian for “automatic Kalashnikov,” derived from his name and the "47" is the year the firearm was designed(1947).

Before his death in 2013, Kalashnikov lived to regret his invention of the AK-47 firearm after he saw how it was being used for the wrong purposes, especially during the world wars, and by the terrorists. He insisted that the firearm should be used as a "weapon of defense not a weapon of offense".
