Residents in Malindi gathered to commemorate annual Mekatilili Wa Menza Festival

It was prompt and color as the annual Mekatilili Wa Menza Festival to commemorate the heroine who led the Mijikenda to fight against the British colonialists kicked off in Malindi.

This year the organizers from Malindi District Cultural Association says that the celebrations will be different as they will not go to Shakahola where where Mekatilili attacked the colonialists and became the champion due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Instead the elders began having their prayers at Uhuru gardens in Malindi town, where there is the statue of the Mijikenda heroine and then matched in town distributing face masks and sensitizing people on the importance of following the ministry of health protocols and coexisting peacefully.

Both men and women dressed in full traditional regalia attended the ceremony though the numbers were low due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Joseph Karisa the Cultural Association Secretary General in Malindi, said that currently there are elderly people being killed on allegations off being witches, he urged people to stop the inhuman act.
